How to Remove Blank Pages from a Scanned PDF
Learn how to remove blank backs, separator sheets, duplicate scans, and unwanted pages from a scanned PDF while reviewing every page before export.
Short answer
Use PDFresh X-Ray when a scan includes blank backs, separator sheets, duplicate pages, or pages that should not be sent. Keep the original file, review every suggested blank, then export a new checked copy.
Why blank pages appear
Duplex scanners often capture the back of each sheet even when nothing was printed there. Batch jobs can also include separator sheets, test scans, or repeated pages added while rescanning a document.
Blank is not always empty
A page that looks blank in a small thumbnail may still contain a faint stamp, page number, signature, pencil note, watermark, or scan noise. Treat automatic blank detection as a review aid, not as proof that a page can be removed.
PDFresh workflow
Open X-Ray, choose one PDF, wait for thumbnails, use blank-page analysis, inspect each highlighted page, remove only the pages you do not want, rotate sideways pages if needed, and export a checked PDF.
Review styles
A conservative review removes only pages that are visibly empty. A standard review removes obvious blank backs after checking thumbnails. An aggressive review may remove pages with light marks, so it should only be used when you have also opened the original nearby.
Tested example
A 12-page duplex office scan with four blank backs was loaded locally. The blank-page suggestion marked the four mostly white backs, the cleaned export kept eight pages, and the original file was unchanged.
Failure cases
Very faint ink, low-contrast stamps, dirty scanner glass, colored paper, and intentionally blank form pages can confuse visual review. Encrypted, damaged, or very large PDFs may fail before thumbnails are available.
Limits
PDFresh does not perform OCR, deskew tilted text, redact sensitive information, repair corrupted PDFs, or decide whether a page is legally safe to delete.
