Extract Pages vs Delete Pages from a PDF

Decide whether to extract selected pages into a new PDF or delete pages from the current document when cleaning scans, packets, or long files.

Short answer

Extract pages when the pages you want to keep are the main point. Delete pages when the document is mostly correct and only a few pages should be removed.

Comparison

If you need pages 4-6 from a 70-page manual, extraction is clearer. If a 70-page scan has two blank backs, deletion is clearer. Both workflows create a new file and leave the original PDF untouched.

Examples

For a contract, extract the signature pages or exhibit range. For an invoice packet, delete duplicate scan pages. For a manual, extract one chapter. For a scanned form packet, clean blank backs and sideways pages before sending.

Tested example

A 24-page source PDF was used in two workflows. Extracting 2-4, 9 produced a four-page output. Cleaning the same file by deleting two unwanted pages produced a 22-page output with the original order otherwise preserved.

Failure cases

Range mistakes are easy when a PDF viewer shows cover pages, Roman numerals, or inserted blank pages. Write down the intended output pages before exporting, then compare the exported page count.

Limits

Neither workflow edits text inside a PDF, performs OCR, redacts content, compresses files, or changes the original PDF in place.
